Jan Caeyers, conductor and musicologist at KU Leuven, quickly rose to fame with the New Belgian Chamber Orchestra and the Beethoven Academy. His research focuses on the integration of music and science. In 2009, he wrote the first comprehensive Dutch-language biography of Beethoven's life and work. Caeyers portrays Beethoven as a brilliant composer and sheds light on his extremely complicated and tormented personality. He also takes account of the historical context and comments lucidly on Beethoven's music, which became more complex and idiosyncratic over the years.
