Dr. Martin West was born in 1937 in London. He studied at St.Paul's School and at Balliol College. Since 1963 he has been a fellow of the Oxford University College. He's been publishing ancient Greek texts and he has written several articles on early Greek philosophy and about classic literature.
It isn't easy to understand a historical text genuinly, even when somebody knows the language, because often the manuscripts became known only some centuries later than they had been written.
Scientific and historical criticism was developed at the beginning of the 19th century, but by the seventies of the 20th century, a number of new methods have been worked out. The author succeeded in introducing this two new branches of science to both the editors and the users of the critical editions.
